“We’ll Meet Again”, by Bryan Thurlow.
This talk was originally written by Bryan to help Primary school children understand what life was like for some children in the Second World War. In this very enjoyable presentation “We’ll Meet Again – An Evacuee’s Story,” Bryan Thurlow draws on his theatrical background to bring to life the experiences of children evacuated from East London to the Suffolk countryside during the Second World War. He concentrates on the emotional upheaval of leaving home, the challenges of adjusting to a new environment, and the enduring hope of reunion. Bryan humanises a major wartime phenomenon by embodying voices, accents and memories.
Using anecdotes to illustrate both the light-hearted moments of rural life and the realities of leaving a home and town you’ve grown up. He paints a vivid picture of school children packing hastily, the nervous journey to an unfamiliar farm, the anxieties of families and the uncertainty that life will never quite be the same again.
Ultimately, Bryan Thurlow’s talk offers more than a history lesson. It invites the audience to empathise with young evacuees, to remember that war affects those left at home just as much as those involved in battle, and to appreciate the lives and impact of such events on individual and communities.
